About

Statement of Purpose:

"Passionate about Engineering"

I am an Engineer. I enjoy the process of developing an idea into a functional product. I cannot claim to be a fanatic about any particular end product; but I am driven by the art of quantifying nebulous concepts into solid design/fabrication/development requirements and love collaborating with individuals of differing disciplines and imparting the knowledge I've gained to junior engineers with whom I work.

Professional Career

My Engineering career has been primarily a split between a number of routine tasks and/or lofty concept requests or process investigations.        The routine tasks include drawing reviews for technical acceptability as well as cross checking designs to various standards such as ASME Y14.5, 14.36, AISC N690, ACI 349, ACI 318, etc. as well as material specifications. Technical reviews can entail static or dynamic analysis that is either calculated by hand or modeled using F.E. software (Femap/NX Nastran, GT-Strudl, Patran/MSC NASTRAN).
The lofty requests generally begin with a vague request of some end goal with significant amounts of required information missing from the request. However, with an understanding of the end goal, I am able to derive quantifiable design parameters to complete the task. This frequently requires communication with other parties affected by the design so as to ensure that design tradeoffs and consequences are considered prior to implementation. Furthermore, I have done analytics to support designs and have provided onsite support to fabricators and installation activities to ensure that the intents of the design are met in the as-built final product.
The feeling of accomplishment associated with routine tasks makes the type of work compelling. However, accomplishing lofty requests provides me a sense of pride that is difficult to match with more straight forward tasks.

  • Leadership: Direct junior engineers in accomplishing program goals. Mentor engineers in design analysis. Train Engineers in recognizing faulty testing operation and methods for remediation.

  • Stress Engineer: Assess ducting products airworthiness to the standards of DO-160 or MIL-STD-810. Perform hand calculations and finite element analysis (Patran/MSC Nastran) of products including thermal analysis, thermo-structural analysis, fatigue, random vibration, sinusoidal vibration, quasi-static analysis, and pipe stress analysis. Analyze test equipment and hardware for their ability to survive their testing regime.

  • Design Engineer: Generate detailed CAD models of products and their testing configurations. Generate drawings utilizing GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and company standards. Aide vendors and fabricators in understanding design intent or approving design deviations.

  • Project Management: Establish project timelines with customers and internal department staff. Track tasks execution and ensure problems are proactively addressed and contingency plans are established. Communicate and present to management and customers the state of progress and projected performance. Generate project proposals and their associated cost estimates as well as time required to complete.

  • Test Engineer: Generate test procedures for new products or requalification efforts. Conduct proof and burst pressurization as well as endurance testing. Monitor and direct test technicians in vibration testing. Diagnose and fix any testing malfunctions. Draft test result reports and deliver to customers. Draft and conduct failure investigation reports. Generate plans and execute, where necessary, the disassembly and review of failed products during testing. Develop control software for hardware in Labview.

  • Software Development: Developed software to scan through 3 years of production backlog excel files to query/aggregate information. Wrote program to catalog all items missing key information in the company’s document control database. Programmed system shell to execute a backlog of Nastran input files.

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems
El Segundo, CA
Senior Mechanical Engineer                                                                 April 2016 – August

  • Leadership: Coordinated group’s analyses into response documents for program management.

  • Stress Engineer: Hand calculations and finite element analysis of ground equipment and aerospace hardware. Analysis for fluid systems, optical systems, electronic enclosures, and circuit card assemblies. Generated flow-down acceleration spectrums to suppliers from input loading and structural rigidity.

  • Thermal Engineer: Thermal analysis of circuit card assemblies using ICEPAK and hand calculations. Hand calculations for validation of thermal stress maps for stress analysis.

  • Software Development: Developed innovative scripts to analyze all design load condition permutations in Nastran, feed results into an excel bolted joint design software, and return worst case conditions margins of safety. Wrote Patran native scripts in PCL to facilitate model development.

  • Systems Engineer: Reviewed suppliers analysis packages for acceptability in meeting contract requirements with supplier and with the company’s customer. Worked as mechanical representative in a team to develop ground support hardware requirements for a new program.
